Current Projects: Organic Peanuts in the Southeast

Hebert Green Agroecology is the lead institution in a project to develop organic peanut production in the crop's heartland. We coordinate the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE)-sponsored effort with scientists at the University of Georgia, the USDA's Agricultural Research Service, Clemson University, and North Carolina State University, plus three farmers in Georgia and South Carolina.

Organic peanuts represent an undersupplied yet lucrative market for growers, but virtually all production is confined to arid lands in New Mexico and Texas. Only the small-seeded Valencia-type peanut is grown there. In the Southeast, the historical home for production of a great variety of peanut types, we are working to help farmers cash in on this opportunity.
